I found a great series on ModernDrummer.com when I stumbled across an article on the history of drumsticks and how the number/letter naming convention started. I had forgotten what the letters on the sticks actually stood for over the years and it was a great refresher.

It is called What You Need To Know About and it is an excellent repository of information, here is the link:

On that note…

I use ProMark  Shira Kashi™ Oak”Jazz” Wood Tip sticks as the oak is somewhat durable over time and the overall feel and weight works great for me. It is based on the 7A in which the A represents Orchestra, go figure.

Richard Geer Uses ProMark Shira Kashi Oak Jazz Wood Tip DrumsticksI used to use the larger 747 Oak Wood Tips that Mr. Peart uses but over time I think the stick was too long and the improper weight and length for me – that’s what she said 😉 –  and caused issues with my right hand falling asleep a lot while playing the ride cymbal. That coupled with the disc issues in my neck made it worse and uncomfortable to play. I remember reading somewhere that Mr. Peart is of formidable stature, almost Nephilim like, and that style of stick is great for him. The Jazz series sticks are a much better fit for me and my stature and give me great control of intricate ride work.
